Source Holders for use with the HDR1000 plus Well Chamber
The
HDR1000 Plus Well Chamber, SeeDOS Code 90008, is a good choice for low dose rate isotopes. Ten different isotope source holders are available for all existing low dose rate isotopes. The HDR 1000 Plus Ion Chamber comes with one isotope insert of your choice.
The
IVB1000 Well Chamber, SeeDOS Code 90009, is a good choice for low dose rate brachytherapy sources in fixed long configurations such as RAPID Strand, Interstrand® and Isosleeve. It is also the chamber of choice for all intravascular source trains. A new range of source
holders are being introduced for this longer chamber which has a 100mm long sweet spot, unmatched in other available chambers. This provides exceptional precision and accuracy for brachytherapy source activities.

NIST traceable ADCL well chamber calibrations are available for all source types and configurations.
For low dose rate brachytherapy, the standard of practice has shifted so that the manufacturer's calibration alone is no longer adequate. "However, it is the responsibility of the institution to verify that this calibration is correct. the institution should compare the manufacturer's stated value with the institution's standard." ref. Individual Seed Calibration for Prostate Cancer Treatment
Batch Assay Measurements
Source Holder for Seed Batch Assay, SeeDOS Code 70022 LDR brachytherapy treatment for prostate cancer measures high numbers of seeds. A treatment center must sometimes receive up to 500 seeds if several cases are imminent. Individual seed calibration is too time consuming and cumber-some. For these large number of seeds, a random sampling of at least
10% of the seeds should be calibrated.
Multiple seed measurements are performed with the
Source Holder for LDR Seed Batch Assay, SeeDOS Code 70022. This source holder holds up to 500 of the iodine or palladium seeds typically used for prostate cancer treatment.
Seeds are positioned at the most sensitive area of the HDR 1000 Plus Ion Chamber. If you have the Source Holder 70016 (above) with an ADCL calibration for the isotope being measured, that calibration can be transferred to Source Holder 70022.
Self absorption resulting from a large number of seeds being placed in the insert is significant. Because of this self absorption, correction factors must be experimentally obtained for each type of LDR seed used. This method is described in detail in Med. Phys. 22 (9) Sept. 1995. Note, a correction factor for iodine and palladium as shown in Fig. 2 of this article,
should be determined for each individual well chamber upon receipt of the chamber.
Before each assay procedure, a constancy check should be performed to assure the integrity of the calibration system. This should be done with a long half-life isotope like caesium. Go To I/Pd seed measurements for more

Output Measurement of I-125 RAPID Strand™ Iodine Seeds
A fast and convenient method of performing a quality assurance measurement of your I-125 RAPID Strand™ using the Source Holder, SeeDOS Code 70023 under sterile conditions.
- The sterile insert maintains sterility of the I-125 RAPID Strand™.
- Five seeds are measured simultaneously.
- QA measurements within + 5% of calibrated IMC6711 I-125 Seeds™.
- Short term precision is < 1%.
- No measurable rotational dependence.
- The complete calibration system is lightweight and easily portable for use in a sterile environment.
The
I-125 RAPID Strand™ Source Holder, SeeDOS Code 70023 is constructed to simultaneously measure five seeds at one end of the I-125 RAPID Strand™ while the I-125 RAPID Strand™ remains in the spacing jig. The spacing jig is then inverted and the five seeds at the other end are measured. The source holder itself can be sterilized.
To determine the activity of your I-125 RAPID Strand™, a correction factor has been determined. An I-125 RAPID Strand™ containing 10 iodine seeds was obtained and an extensive evaluation was performed with the HDR 1000 Plus Well Chamber and the I-125 RAPID Strand™ Source Holder, SeeDOS Code 70023. Following the evaluation, individual seeds of the I-125 RAPID Strand™ were cut from the strand and
individually calibrated. To obtain a correction factor, these measurements were compared to the initial, collective seeds measurements of the intact I-125 RAPID Strand™ in Source Holder 70023. Low Dose Rate (LDR) - Iridium Source Holders
Source Holder for Low Dose Rate 192 Ir Ribbon Seeds, SeeDOS Code 70009 has a 3mm diameter acrylic tube which extends from the top of the insert to the most active area of the chamber. It makes one loop at the active area and extends back to the top of the insert. A collective calibration of the entire ribbon of seeds is obtained. Fourteen iridium
seeds spaced one centimetre centre to centre can fit into the active area. Some intravascular brachytherapy sources can be measured in this insert. |

Source Holder for Measurement of Iridium Wire Coils, SeeDOS Code 70022 The iridium wire coil is placed in the tube and uniformly compressed to 2mm for measurement at the most sensitive point of the ion chamber. This consistent positioning provides for excellent measurement reproducibility. Short term reproducibility is 0.6%. Linearity over a range
of 124 to 2036 MBq is better than 0.1%. |

High Dose Rate (HDR) - Iridium Source Holder
Source Holder for High Dose Rate Iridium, SeeDOS Code 70010, has a 2.2 mm opening for the catheter. A rubber O-ring secures the catheter with a uniform constricting pressure to prevent any movement of the catheter. The holder positions the source in the centre of the most sensitive position of the HDR
1000 plus Well Chamber.
The calibration procedure is easy and uncomplicated. The time required for calibration is only a fraction of that required for thimble ion chamber techniques.

Caesium-137 Source Holders
Source Holder for Caesium-137 sources, SeeDOS Code 70020 has a 5mm diameter opening and is commonly used with manually loaded caesium sources. A spacer within the source holder positions the caesium insert at the most active area of the chamber. The spacer for positioning the caesium source is removable so that the insert can also be used with some longer caesium
sources, and with larger HDR Ir-192 catheters. |

Source Holder for Caesium Remote Afterloading, SeeDOS Code 70003 has a 7.1mm diameter opening. This insert is used with LDR remote afterloading treatment systems. There is no spacer because the afterloading system positions the sources. This insert can also be used with cobalt sources used in some LDR remote afterloading treatment systems. |
